The Best Ingredients to Fight Acne

Hello Beauties!
Unfortunately, acne can appear at all stages of your life. It’s one of the most common skin conditions in the world, and according to the NHS, around 80% of people will have it between the ages of 11 and 30. So trust us, you’re not alone.
Essentially, acne is caused by excess sebum, which is naturally formed by your body and produces oil. Throughout the day or night, the oil can mix with hair or dirt on your face, which clogs pores with bacteria and causes breakouts.
Here are some of the main ingredients used in acne-fighting skincare products, helping you decide which of these are the best fit to look after your skin.
Salicylic Acid
This ingredient has both anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, it helps prevent your pores from becoming clogged up. Salicylic acid is derived from salicin, a naturally occurring compound found in the bark of willow and aspen trees, as well as fruits such as strawberries, kiwis and blackberries.
Salicylic acid exfoliates the skin, aiding the removal of dead and dull skin cells. It also improves uneven skin texture by getting rid of the cells that reduce the clarity of your skin.
Appropriate for all skin types, it soothes skin affected by redness. However, when used too often or on especially sensitive skin, salicylic acid can cause dryness or flakiness. We recommend finding a gentle and non-abrasive product if you have sensitive skin.
Sulphur
Sulphur is a naturally occurring mineral that can be found in hot springs, volcanoes and even the human body. Like salicylic acid, it has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties that help to target blemishes and balance out the excess of sebum production.
Best used on oily skin, sulphur is great for acne. It dissolves dead skin cells at the surface of the skin, which discourages excess oil production. However, when used too often, sulphur can cause dry skin.
Glycolic Acid
A naturally occurring acid, glycolic acid is the smallest of the alpha hydroxy acid group and suitable for all skin types. Rather than penetrating deep into your pores to unclog them, glycolic acid takes a softer approach and simply exfoliates the surface layer of your skin. This is done by breaking down the bonds that hold dead skin cells together. It also dissolves sebum to allow more oil control.
